Ever since 12-year-old Scott Banke uttered the words “see ya later” to the camera as he enjoyed the trip of a lifetime, his family was inspired by his spirit and determination to enjoy life. Scotty was ten years old when he was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, a rare type of bone cancer. Scott became known for his personal visits to his fellow patients while at the hospital and then encouraging them by performing magic tricks, telling jokes and providing smiles and laughs for all in attendance. Even though his prognosis was grim, Scotty would never say goodbye, choosing instead to tell people, “See Ya Later”. Scott’s hope and zest for life was infectious and he wanted to share that hope with as many people as he could, especially the kids he shared treatment rooms with at Children’s Hospital. Scotty’s credo is the basis of our name and how we seek to inspire and encourage others to this day. Soon after Scotty’s death in 2001, the “See Ya Later” Foundation was founded. In 2010, the foundation expanded into Washington and we are now entering our 9th year of being an impact maker in the community and we have had the privilege, with your support, of helping over 75 families during their struggle with a child in medical crisis.
The primary mission of SYL is our Seeds of Hope outreach. This program provides support and resources to families in medical crisis. It is the foundation’s mission to “adopt” families by providing that family with special time together, and/or providing needs such as yard work, minor home repair, automobile repair, helping with medical bills or simply supplying the family with basic needs such as clothing, groceries, school supplies or gas money. Family experiences include VIP trips and sporting events, overnight stays to local attractions such as Great Wolf Lodge, as well as day trips to places such as the zoo or other popular local attractions. Our Seeds of Hope program provides these services to these families with absolutely no strings attached.
To make sure we pay it forward, SYL also awards six $1,500 college scholarships to graduating seniors in Auburn, Washington each year. We look for young men and women that are impact makers in our community and will continue to make a difference in the future wherever they may land. To date, we have provided $36,500 in scholarship offers to these fantastic students.
In honor of Scotty’s legacy, we are currently seeking donations in the form of auction items, sponsorships and participants so we can positively impact as many families as possible. We greatly appreciate your support of our foundation and hope that we can count on you again this year as we strive to Inspire Youth and Encourage Families.
