South Sound Chamber of Commerce Legislative Coalition Legislative Report – February 9, 2024
We are now past the first committee cut off dates so bills are being worked by each of the houses on the floor. Tuesday, February 13 at 5 p.m. is the deadline for bills to be out of the house of origin in order to be considered alive for the remainder of the session (unless it is needed to pass one of the budgets.
Unfortunately, the Senate passed SB 5778, the “captive audience bill” that would prohibit employers from holding mandatory meetings where religious or political matters are discussed. While this sounds reasonable, the reality is this is meant to shut down discussions regarding unionization. The bill has moved to the House and is scheduled for a hearing next week indicating a desire to jam this bill through quickly
Issues that are still being considered include UI for Striking Workers, a bottle bill, REET tax bills and a bill that would ban idling for more than five minutes for medium and heavy commercial vehicles.
I’ve highlighted these bills below and also highlighted key hearings for next week. WE NEED TO MAKE SURE OUR PRIORITY AND POSITIONS ARE CORRECT FOR BILLS SO PLEASE REVIEW. Also, please take a look at all the bills that DIED so far.
More bills will be scheduled for hearings as they pass over the next few days.
